Egyptian Luxor Hotels St George River Winter Palace Nile ferry boat crossing and this was the manner of crossing to the West bank from the cruiseboats and hotels in Luxor proper. The road bridge over the Nile slightly to the south of the town was opened in 1998 and then all journeys to the West Bank sites was done by coach and much less romantic than crossing the Nile by ferry boat. It is still possible to use the public ferry and then get a taxi from the ticket office near Qurna al-Gaddah. In 1994 on my first trip I stayed in the Etap Hotel now the Mercure and it was a great location on the promenade, great views over the River with easy access by foot to the Luxor Museum, to public ferry points for crossing the Nile and to nearby shops or just enjoyed a leisurely walk along the tree lined waterfront by the berthed cruiseboats and feluccas. You could see the Temple of Hatshepsut tucked into the Theban hills, watch the balloons starting their early morning flights or see feluccas and cruiseboats sailing along the Nile. In my first few visits to Egypt but especially my first the Nile cruiseboat the RA 11 anchored adjacent to the main promenade and we were collected in the morning by ferryboats and taken over the river to the East Boat and brought back after our visits to the West Bank sites. Coaches were waiting on the West Bank to take us to the sites.

Egypt Luxor West Bank Qurna River Nile dates Hatshepsut crops green taken in 1994 so from near the ferry crossing at Qurna al-Gaddah which was the option in those days from getting across the Nile looking across this fertile plain to the Theban Hills and in the direction of Hatshepsut Temple. Today the preferred method for package tours for crossing the River Nile is by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The scene is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Today fertilisation of the river farmland is by artificial means and of course has an impact on the Egyptian import bills.

Luxor Nile Balloons flight soaring Western desert landing hills Egypt after passing the several famous temples situated on the West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor. Apart from the main sites visited, in this general area are several Tombs of the Nobles which are usually privately organised visits but very well worth the time if you have a few days to spare in Luxor. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. I understand in recent times the breakfast has come to a boxed meal probably eaten on the bus journey back to the hotel or cruiseboat.

Through the work of the SCA the old houses of this area are being demolished and the modern occupants are be rehoused on new houses. After the removal of most of the houses an extensive exploration and survey of the area amongst the Tombs of the Nobles will be undertaken to identify any unidentified tombs while the various entrances to the existing tombs are being refurbished to make the area more accessible to visitors. Some of the better houses will be retained as part of a UNESCO sponsored museum as part of the history and occupation of the West Bank.

Egyptian Luxor West Bank Thebes Valley Queens approach querns hills rocks is the lesser known and visited burial necropolis on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in which some Royal burials of this ancient civilisation of Pharaohs wives are contained as well as wives of important officials. Certainly one of the most beautiful is that of Queen Nefertari [66], restored by the Getty Institute and is not always open. Entry is by limited special permission and substantial entrance fee. I did have the chance to see it for a very limited time and of course no photography was allowed but it was an awesome experience, almost akin to be being in a Disney cartoon rich in colour. The usual tombs visited on a package visit are Queem Tyti [52], Prince Amun-hir-Khopshef [55] and Prince Kha’emweset [44].

Egypt Luxor Hotel River Nile View balloons dawn West Bank Hatshepsut looking over the quiet River Nile on a sunny September dawn from one of the riverside balconies of this long standing central Luxor Hotel on the city waterfront. This was my first visit to Luxor and I was lucky to get changed to a room in the north wing which was considerably quieter than one in the centre of the hotel above the swimming pool, various restaurants and a dance floor. Although we travelled First Class and the seats were undoubtately some of the most comfortable I had had on a train the toilets were probably the worst I have ever experienced anywhere and given the importance of tourism to Egypt and the huge pool of labour available this was an unacceptable lack of standards.
