Caption: | Black Middens Bastle House, Tarset valley, Northumberland, England, UK. house were fortified farmhouses built in the border areas during the16th century when raids by cattle rustling Border Reivers were common. They were strongly built of large stone blocks and comprised a lower, usually vaulted, section in which animals could be placed and an upper section to which the people could retire, being only accessible from the inside via a retractable ladder. The flight of steps on the outside of the house is a latter addition, as are the upper and lower doorways. |
