 "The Spirit of Portland" sculpture, with Chesil Beach beyond, Portland Heights, Portland, Dorset, England, UK. Sculpted by Joanna Szuwalska (2000) in Portland Stone. Portland stone is an oolitic limestone of the Jurassic period and a well known and excellent building stone. Chesil Bank is a splendid example of a linear type storm beach of flint and chert pebbles, which commences at Bridport Harbour and finishes 29 km away at Chiswell beneath the cliffs of Portland. It's maximum height, about 14 m above mean sea level, and pebble size is to be found at the Portland end. It is generally between 150 and 200 m wide.
