Caption: | The tower on Glastonbury Tor, Glastonbury, Somerset, England, UK. Thetower is all that remains of a church dedicated to St Michael which collapsed in an earthquake of 1275. The Tor has been associated with magic, mystery, folklore and religion for thousands of years. Its terraces have been dated to Neolithic times, folklore suggests it is the home of Gywnn ap Nudd, the king of the underworld, and is the gateway to the realm of Annwn, Joseph of Arimathea is said to have built an early chapel here, there is association with the Holy Grail and also with King Arthur and Avalon. Richard Whiting, the last abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, was executed on the Tor in 1539. |
