 Plaque commemorating 150 th anniversary of Tolpuddle Martyrs transportation, Tolpuddle, Dorset, England, UK. Lionel Murray, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, planted a sycamore seedling from the original tree in 1984. The village is famous for the Tolpuddle Martyrs who were sentenced to transportation in 1834 for forming an illegal union, an event which is now regarded as the start of the trades union movement.
