In 1309 it became the property of Henry, the first Lord Percy. The first Duke of Northumberland transformed what was left of the original Norman castle and subsequent medieval additions into a palace in the mid 18 th century. This was further repeated in the Victorian era by the fourth Duke. The gardens were created at the end of 20 th century.
