Keywords: | The 83 foot high monument with the Percy Lion on top, symbol of the Percy family, was designed by David Stephenson and erected in 1816 by grateful tenants of Hugh the third Duke of Northumberland, because he had reduced their rents during the agricultural depression after the Napoleonic War. It is also known as the "Farmer's Folly", because when the Duke realised that his tenants were rich enough to afford such a monument he raised their rents again!
