Caption: | South facade of Bath Abbey seen over Abbey Churchyard, Bath,Somerset, England, UK. The abbey church was commenced in 1499 by Bishop Oliver King after the original Norman church had fallen into ruin following the bishopric's restoration to Wells. The dissolution of the monasteries delayed its completion and it was not consecrated until 1616. It was restored between 1864 and 1874 by Sir Gilbert Scott and is the last of the great English pre-reformation churches built in late Perpendicular style. |
