This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

Egypt Step Pyramid Saqqara house palm trees fronds green desert backdrop and gives a very good idea of the reason for the location of this huge sprawling necropolis built along the desert escarpment well above the inundation zone of the River Nile. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. In this case the unique and earliest stone built tomb, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser from 2500BC, the first experiment of the later true pyramid style is seen here towering above the fertile farming land that runs alongside the whole journey from Cairo.
