Blanchland Abbey was founded in 1165 by Walter de Bolbec for twelve White Canons and it is from these that the village gained its name The monastery lay neglected for two hundred years following the Dissolution In the late 1700 s the village was almost entirely rebuilt for the lead miners who worked mines on the neighbouring moors.
