SO YOU WANT TO BE A PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER...

As a portrait photographer, you would specialise in taking photographs of people, either individually or in groups. Usually, a portrait session takes place in a studio, at the client's home or in an outdoor setting.

TYPES OF PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY...

There are several types of portrait photographing including:

  • Traditional Portraits

This is a classical style of photography that we're all very aware of, sometimes also known as a headshot, that focuses on the face as the predominant element of the image. The purpose of the photograph is to capture a visual representation of the person. The subject is normally looking directly at the camera and is either captured as just a headshot, two-thirds of the body or full body.

  • Environmental Portraits

This term basically refers to an image where the subject is photographed in their "natural environment". For example, a builder on a construction site, an artist in a studio or a chef in a kitchen. The image is usually carefully set up by the photographer with the surroundings designed to emphasise the subject's character.

  • Candid Portraits

A candid portrait is generally taken either without the subject's knowledge or when they don't expect. This is done to capture the raw emotion of the subject and is usually used in photojournalism, travel photography, street photography or event photography. This is a similar style to an environmental portrait, however, it is usually captured in the moment rather than set up beforehand.

  • Lifestyle Portraits

This style of portrait photography is designed to show a particular "lifestyle" experienced by the subjects and to evoke an emotion. This is commonly seen in family portraiture, however, it is also used by industries such as editorial publications, fashion brands, pharmaceutical and food companies to sell their products or services.

SALES METHODS AND TECHNIQUES

Most people research portraits, especially family portraits, before they book a photography session. So use social media to your advantage. One of the best social media platforms for this is Pinterest. Many potential clients look at a photographer's style on Pinterest before booking them so make sure you have an account ready and waiting for them. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are also great for marketing blasts. Use every social platform to spread the word about your portrait business.

PROMOTIONS AND ADVERTISING

Attending local craft and art fairs is a great way to market your portrait photography business. This is a great way of getting in front of local people as well as interacting with potential clients on a more personal level.

When it comes to family portraiture, building relationships with local businesses that specialise in the family industry and young children could be a mutually beneficial arrangement. For example, you could approach businesses who specialise in children's clothing and toys or you could also approach local schools, hairdressers and play areas.

One of the largest platforms used by young families is social media so make sure you are showcasing your work on all the major platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.

Every year we create seasonal page sets which you can easily download into your website so that you can immediately start selling in minutes. Or if you prefer you can just take inspiration from the page sets and create your own offers and discounts.

The first step to a great portrait website is to purge through your images and remove any that don't tally up with your brand or style.
