Louise Farmer Combining my passion for photography with my love for travel, in 2008, I decided to give up my job as a Sales Manager to travel the world and explore my creativity. During this period I learned the basics of digital photography on a course in NZ, and upon my return to the UK one year later, entered some of my best images in competitions. My entries won the Intrepid Travel Monthly Photography Competition and the runner-up prize in The Australian Travel Magazine Photo Competition. One of my images was also selected as a finalist in The Travel Photographer of the Year Competition 2009 (TPOTY single image category). In addition to these achievements I was delighted to be selected as a participant in the Sony Air NZ Fashion Week Photo Competition 2008. Enthusiastic and determined to become professional, I enrolled on the full-time Diploma in Professional Photo Imaging course at Birmingham Metropolitan College in September 2009. Lacking in industry experience I’ve found the course to be extremely rewarding. I’ve not only gained invaluable studio experience but have also been taught the ins-and-outs of the photography business in general. I am now fully confident about the procedures involved in setting myself up as a freelance photographer. Keen to gain some vocational experience, over the past year I have been a regular contributing events photographer for the BBC Birmingham Web Site. Some of the images from these documentary projects have also been published in local newspapers. I love the excitement of people and places and find it challenging to capture an expression, mood or environment. I’m not really into props or overly staged images. My shots tend to be creative, simple and spontaneous.  Andrew Simon Since an early age, Andy has been fascinated with photography and how a single image can invoke such emotional responses. Setting up his own darkroom at the age of 13, he continued to explore film photography and in turn, digital photography. Always with a passion for landscape work and the world around him, you can often find him wandering around in a field with his camera looking for the perfect image. After working as a nurse for several years, in 2008 he changed career and enrolled on a City and Guilds Photography course at Birmingham Metropolitan College, quickly regaining his focus for image capture and in 2009 established his own website, Darkslide Photography to promote his work further. Andy has always been a strong supporter of charities and in 2009 put his passion for photography to good use, establishing Pin-up for Heroes. A project to produce a Pin-up style calendar reminiscent of 1940’s paintings and art featured on aeroplanes of the era. The calendar was set up to raise funds for the Armed Forces charity, Help for Heroes, who aid with rehabilitation of injured troops. The 2010 Calendar was a huge success, donating over £5500 to the charity, and Andy has already commenced work on the 2011 project with the hope of raising even more funds for such an essential cause. Passionate about breaking the norms of society on how people perceive beauty, Andy now specialises in Alternative fashion, as well as Pin-up and Burlesque photography, and has worked with many performers and models within the industry, as well as clothing and accessory suppliers and has recently had some his work published on the ‘A Box of Burlesque’ website who specialise in Vintage and burlesque clothing. Most recently Andy was awarded first prize in the National City and Guilds yearly photographic competition for one of his images in the level 3 category. A simple piece captured solely with a mobile phone camera showing the morning sun through a window, and stands true to his philosophy that the best camera to have is the one available at that time, be it a film camera, digital SLR, Polaroid or even a mobile phone, being able to capture that single moment before it is lost. David Murray From the dawn of time, Dave has been fascinated by the essence of simplicity. This is reflected in the style of photography presented by Dave. He is a keen traveller, visiting far flung corners of the world at any given opportunity. He is a DJ in the fine art of 'Drum and Base', devoting probably a little too much time to the practice. Landscape photography is Dave's game as you can see in the gallery. He enjoys wandering through the countryside and documenting his observations through photography and producing 'pretty images'! He enjoys many other activities, including scuba diving in which he is schooled to an advanced level, diving in many countries throughout the world. David Madden Dave is most at home with his camera on the side line of an ice rink during an ice hockey game. Out of season, he is to be found enjoying photographing the canals of Birmingham or stately homes. But of late, he has enjoyed success in the studio with depicting the change of ergonomically designed electrical devices. Away from the camera, he enjoys reading and seeks inspiration from Ansel Adams, David Bailey, Brian Duffy and John French. In the future, he hopes to continue to push the boundaries of his creativity from his passion for photography. His ambition is to continue to record the changes the architectural changes in Birmingham in particular the loss of the old and the arrival of new structures.
