Terezin
The fortress town of Terezin (one hour from Prague) was during the second world war known as Theresienstadt and was made into a model ghetto, concentration camp, and prison. The small fortress from where these photos are served as a prison mainly for Czechs, but also as a concentration camp from where Jews would be taken elsewhere, mainly Auschwitz. 140,000 Jews passed through here from 1940 to 1945, and many were killed or died from disease during those years as well. The fortress is a monument to human folly, and has been left intact, which makes for an eerie experience.
