About
I am a professional landscape, travel and wildlife photographer based near Winchester in England.
I believe that a successful photograph is usually more than an accurate record of something. I strive to produce an emotional connection between the person viewing the photograph and the subject matter. Nature can be astoundingly beautiful and I have been lucky to see many outstanding locations. Many of my more successful photographs have actually been taken locally to my own home where I have been able to develop the understanding of when a subject will be at its best and have the opportunity to visit a location many times.
In the last few years I have lead many photography holidays in Italy, Morocco and India. One of the joys on these trips is the photography of people. Underlying my approach to this subject is to never offend anyone by taking their picture. It is a particular joy for me to photograph people in remote villages who have not been contaminated by Western tourism and who will most happily engage with me and my camera.
I have been fortunate to have been successful in some competitions in the last couple of years. In 2007 I was a runner-up in the inaugural AA\Sunday Times "Landscape Photographer of the Year" award with a photograph of a windsurfer attempting to sail amidst giant waves in a force 9 storm. The same year one of my photographs, of some anglers in a boat, was Samsung photo of the year.
In 2009 I had two photographs reach the finals of the Natural History Museum\BBC Wildlife magazines "Wildlife Photographer of the Year". This was particularly satisfying in that I had visited the exhibition several times in the past two decades and always considered the photography to be outstanding. I never thought that I would be able to take a photograph worthy of entry so to see one of my photographs displayed in such a fantastic exhibition was great.
In 2010 I have a further photograph reaching the final stage of judging.
